Volsk is located on the banks of the Volga and is a typical town in provincial Russia. The city had several successful stages in its development, but first the war of 1812, and then the revolution, slowed down its economic growth. Many architectural beauties remained in Volsk from those times, for example, a complex of merchant mansions near the Central Square.

This city of the Saratov region presented the country with Peter Grushin. He stood at the origins of the creation of anti-aircraft missile systems. A monument was erected in honor of the aircraft designer in his small homeland. Volsk also has impressive museum collections. This is especially true of the Natural History Museum and Art Gallery. Among the exhibits there are gifts from both Russian and foreign museums.
